Crown Reduction – Apple Tree

This larger mature apple tree had not been maintained for many years. As a result it’s over all size was causing excess shading in the area of the garden underneath the tree and also in the near by dwelling. It was also starting to shed limbs with a heavy crop damaging the tree.

We reduced the crown of this tree bring the over extended scaffold limbs back in to the main framework, using the remaining branching structure to form the new crown. We lightly thinned this apple tree to increase light penetration and to help avoid over cropping. We also lifted the crown to give more space under the tree and to show off the attractive mature woody frame-work from a greater distance away in the garden.

Now with the periodic pruning of the new regrowth or ‘water shoots’ this tree will keep our clients desired shape and presents in the garden.
